WHO WE ARE

StL Print Week – an annual event dedicated to celebrating the art and industry of printing. Formed as a chance for artists, publishers, designers, printers and print enthusiasts to share information, there's something for everyone and all are welcome. Let's party!

THE HISTORY

The invention of the printing press has been called the single most important invention of all time. Even though we've been predicting the death of the press since its birth, print has proved its viability in a digital age time and again. It’s all around us, every day. It’s language, an expression, a trade. It's art, and we’re here to celebrate it.

WHAT'S TO COME

All events located at the Old North studios of The Firecracker Press and Central Print. StL Print Week, June 20th-26th, is a 7 day series of FREE events. Other events include the APA Wayzgoose June 23rd-26th (a party welcoming letterpress printers from all over the world), and Print Market, June 26th (a vendor fair - sell your goods).

Esther Smith & Dikko Faust

Purgatory Pie Press

Purgatory Pie Press began in 1977 in Madison, Wisconsin when Dikko Faust pied (spilled) an overfilled job case of cold metal 8 point Century Oldstyle.

Dikko sorted that type for weeks, made his first two books and the paper for his third, and moved to New York City. In 1980 Dikko Faust married Esther K Smith and Purgatory Pie Press merged with the E K Smith Museum, a museum of found art, including The Apron Collection. Their wedding invitation was their first print collaboration.

Chris Cheney & Nieves Uhl

Chris Cheney & Nieves Uhl

Sawtooth Print Shop

Sawtooth Print Shop is a letterpress and design studio, born out of Chris Cheney and Nieves Uhl's love of printmaking. Nieves and Chris met at Hatch Show Print, and later became neighbors and business partners. They started the shop when Nieves acquired a cabinet of type, thrown from a barn during a tornado,  and Chris got an antique printing press, rescued from the basement of a sculptor genius. Nieves and Chris decided to combine their fortunes and start their own print and design studio all the way back in 2012.

Brad Vetter

Brad Vetter

Brad Vetter Design

Brad Vetter is a designer, artist, educator and master printer in the field of letterpress printmaking. After studying graphic design at Western Kentucky University, Brad spent eight years honing his craft at the legendary Hatch Show Print in Nashville, TN, one of the oldest continually operating letterpress shops in the country. During his tenure at Hatch he was able to merge his love of the handmade and vintage design in printing projects for his favorite bands (Arcade Fire, My Morning Jacket and Wilco) and the coolest clients (Nike and Anthropologie).

After Hatch, Brad became an independent printer and designer under the mantle Brad Vetter Design. Bouncing between 18th and 21st century technology and techniques, he continues to hand print rock-and-roll posters while also adding more digital design to his repertoire. Brad frequently lectures and hosts workshops throughout the US as well as teaching college-level design classes. His print work has been shown in such notable venues as the San Francisco MoMA, Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art, Columbia College Center for Book and Paper, and the Danish Museum of Media.

Brad newly resides in Louisville, Kentucky where he is excited to become a part of the community while spreading the gospel of letterpress to the masses.

There, she learned to love carving and the process of letterpress printing. Then, she got a job at Hatch Show Print and really honed her typesetting skills designing posters for all kinds of jobs local and international. In five years, she designed and printed hundreds of posters, redistributed thousands of letters and taught about 70 interns the ins and outs of letterpress printing.
